Satisfactory Hunt

This is the first time we've hunting with Mile High. They came highly recommended. First, I'd like to say to all outfitters, say what mean and mean what you say. This is our number 1 gripe about outfitters. They tell you one thing and then on the day of the hunt, now that you're fully committed, they tell you something else. Travis Bullock with Mile High is no different. We ended up in the camp that he told us we would not be in and he said "hey, you're on vacation, just enjoy it". Ok, we enjoyed it but just be up front about where you're putting your hunters. We showed at the airport at 7:30 and didn't get flown out until noon. He had several hunters going to different camps. Once we all landed at the back country airstrip, we were short one saddle. Our guide asked if I planned to ride and I said of course. Because he insisted that we had enough saddles, one other camp was a saddle short and it had to be flown in later. Upon arriving at the camp sight, Mile High didn't resupply it with necessities. They didn't have an ax to cut additional firewood, no additional white gas for lanterns so we ended up using flashlights, no ropes to tie mannies on mules so we had to take support ropes from inside the tents. They left all the food from a prior hunt and stuff was a mess, old and moldy. But let me say that our cook, Becky, who did bring in fresh food, did an excellent job of organizing and feeding us. Finally, we were told that we would not share a tent because we are a husband and wife team and on the 3rd day of our hunt, they sent a text to tell us the other hunters would be coming to our camp so we could fly out on the same flight. We would have been okay with this but, again, we didn't know it up front. We were guided by Travis Patterson, and I would highly recommend him if he still works for Mile High. He got up at dark every morning, saddled the animals, was very organized, knew the territory, worked hard, and got us on the animals. He never quit. He made the hunt fun. During our hunt, we saw one herd of elk, maybe 20 total. Several white tail and some mule deer. We harvested a bull elk and a mule deer. The hunt was a success due to the excellent guiding. The terrain is steep but manageable if you do some physical fitness training before your hunt you'll be able to reach the animals. They were all high up in the terrain. We rode mules and thought they were excellent. There were hunters camping at the airport which was very close to our camp so we did have other hunters in the area. After we got home, a bill arrived from Mile High for $450.00. The outfitter told us that we owed money to fly our meat out (which went out on the same plane as us). This is one of those things you have to decide if it makes or breaks your decision about hunting with this outfitter. This is the 9th back country hunt we've done and the first outfitter to charge us this fee. It should be included in the $11,000 we paid for this hunt. But, you may feel otherwise. Pete at Middlefork Aviation is fantastic and we will fly with him every back country trip. I suggest you arrange to pay him separately. That is what all the other guides have had us do.

Reviewer Comments: Travis and Brenda did a great job. The guides ranged from very experienced to new. The new ones were always paired with the experienced if needed. Travis went out of his way to accommodate our unique needs. They truly went above and beyond what was expected to make it an enjoyable and successful hunt.

Manitoba is known as a top destination for avid waterfowl hunters. Huge flocks of ducks and geese can be found from the Arctic coast of Hudson Bay to the prairie potholes on the southern border of this Canadian province. There is no legal requirement for non-resident waterfowl hunters to use a guide, but many are available and a high percentage of non-Canadian hunters utilize them. In addition black bear, Canada moose and whitetails are hunted throughout the province.

Kansas Hunting Information

Kansas is one of the top producing monster whitetail buck states in the country. It also has some excellent turkey hunting and a few big mule deer in the western part of the state. Kansas has an excellent reputation as a top notch destination for upland birds. It has excellent populations of pheasant and quail due to the vast expanse of suitable prairie and grassland type habitat.
